Mike Blackwell is a refreshing change from all the mundane writers out there. He's just crazy enough to be interesting, and smart enough to be - well, dangerous. Whatever it is, the combination seems to work. If he was a fullback, he'd be a grind-it-out type who always winds up with plus yardage. That's what he'll do for his readers and those who utilize him as a freelance writer. He has a lot of energy, a great work ethic and a good sense of humor. What else is there? More Testimonials >>

This web site was conceived on a balcony in Maui. I sat outside our honeymoon condo with my feet dangling over the railing. The biggest piece of water I’d ever seen was close enough that I could’ve one-hopped it if I were a centerfielder.

Inside the sliding glass doors, my wife of three days was fixing supper in her bathing suit: chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and fresh Hawaiian pineapple. The orchids on the dinner table slow-danced with the ocean breeze.

Watching the whitecaps, I felt a sudden and overwhelming need to slow down. I need to stop bowing to the Deadline Gods of the real world (whatever that is) and get some more of this, I thought. Someday, I promised on the balcony, I will get up in the morning and write until I’m through and then do the same thing tomorrow and next week and next year.

Someday I’ll be like that guy I can barely see on the small sailboard alone in the middle of the Pacific, fighting the wind and bouncing on the waves, sometimes falling, surrounded by beauty, battling to stay dry, always exhilarated.

Someday, I told myself as the soft sounds of Natalie Merchant and frying meat comforted me, I’d throw my writing samples into the abyss of the Internet and see if people thought enough of my work to send me a dollar or two. Someday maybe I’d get my own sailboard. Someday, but not now.

Supper in Maui, after all, was almost ready. Within the hour, after laughing and eating on the balcony, Angie and I sat on the beach, just to the right of where they let you rent goggles and flippers. Moments before our sun disappeared, I realized the guy on the sailboard was gone. I wondered where he went.

Maybe I’m about to find out.
